The movie is an interesting experiment both on the screen and onto the spectator, as scenes progress slowly in gloomy shades to the inevitable ending. Two men alone with themselves on a lighthouse island with nowhere to go but themselves, questioning what is real. The superb acting takes you along in this maddening situation and the direction provides the moody setting, whereas overall it provides the sensation you have when you watch a broody Scandinavian or Russian film from the 50s or 60s. This movie is not for everyone, it is for those who have the guts and patience to dive into a rage of solitude.

An intimate film about the relationship between the British painter and his mother. Elegantly and in times painfully acted by Vanessa Redgrave and Timothy Spall where the images often feel like paintings, which creates a beautiful atmosphere to the film.
